Microsoft Ribbon Licensing Fiasco

2008-01-25 20:40:12
After the release of Microsoft Office 2007 it was apparent that the style of interfaces to come would change radically with the introduction of Office Fluent Ribbon, or more commonly known, Ribbon. Ribbon provided a much needed overhaul to the ever increasing mass of menus upon menus upon nested dialogs, providing a fresh new innovative look. While even today there are still many unhappy people with the changes there is a general consensus that Ribbons will be the way of the future. A large part of that future was down to a brilliant move and insight by Microsoft to allow non-competing products of Office to use the same design and layout for any application, free of charge. Although with the introduction of the license no code was made available, the license opens up the possibility of third party vendors and programmers to develop their own library controls, such as WPF C# Ribbon Control Library and <...

A Delve into Windows Presentation Foundation

2007-11-28 22:12:23
My WPF ExampleWindows Presentation Foundation (WPF) is the new language for creating graphical user interfaces (GUI) in .NET. At first I do have to confess as being somewhat apprehensive to what was coming, but I jumped in (probably stupidly) without knowing what I was doing or how I was going to do it and in about a day I now have a pretty good grasp of how to use it. Some of you are probably wondering why I was apprehensive as generally new stuff from Microsoft is pretty good; well I started programming with .NET way back in the days of version 1.0 (I actually even dabbled a little in the pre-release stuff) and all was well; to assign a value to a label for instance, no matter...

Silly Speed Limits

2007-11-20 08:30:45
When is the government going to wake up and realise the UK road laws just aren’t suitable for purpose anymore? Once again the points and fines for speeding are going up, and will it have any effect of speeding, simply no. Don’t get me wrong, speeding can be dangerous and irresponsible, 20mph limits are generally there for a good reason but seriously is over 70mph on the motorway in good visibility with limited other traffic unsafe? Apparently not as yet again a high-up police officer has been caught doing over the limit, and yes he was punished, but what was the point; in almost every case of off-duty police speeding cases the judge has turned around and said the law is the la...

Double Standards Club

2007-11-13 12:06:08
Ok, everyone knows that football unfortunately generates a significant amount of police work through the unfortunate immature few who decide to try and ruin the game for the rest of us (not that’s I’m a football supporter, although I don’t have any general gripe against it either). The Football Association (FA) or stadiums pay for the police required to manage the trouble resulting (someone please feel free to cite who actually pays for it, and yes I know it’s the punters but never mind), which frankly is the right move; cause problem, use police time / resources, pay, seams simple enough yet oddly another industry seems to be blatantly defying this obvious logic despite to well known social impact of their i...

Buses; curse or otherwise!

2007-11-09 10:46:07
Ok so I have a well known pet hate for buses; they are unreliable, under-utilised, unsuitable, and probably most of all dangerous.

Reliability of most buses is questionable at best due perhaps through little fault of their own, rush hour traffic is inevitable (despite what the supporters of the new road taxing system will have you believe) however certainly the upkeep of buses is certainly doesn’t help! Recently in the Barnsley Chronicle a local bus had a wheel drop off; funny now perhaps (nobody was hurt luckily) however it does indicate massive inadequacies in safety and upkeep of buses. Is it only me or should buses not vibrate so much? Surely it can’t be healthy!?! However, my most favourite joke of r...
